The federal court has selected the first bellwether trial in the talcum powder MDL against Johnson & Johnson. The case, Judkins v. J&J, involves claims that long-term use of J&J baby powder causes ovarian cancer.
This trial will take place in New Jersey, where the MDL is based. At the same time, a mediator has been appointed to explore a global settlement. The court selected Fouad Kurdi from Resolutions LLC to guide both sides through negotiations.
J&J continues to deny all allegations. The company claims its talc-based baby powder is safe and asbestos-free. However, thousands of women allege it caused cancer after years of personal use.
As of July 2025, there are 63,693 active cases in the federal MDL. This makes it one of the largest ongoing product liability lawsuits in the U.S.
Legal experts say this bellwether trial will be a key test. Its outcome could influence how J&J handles future settlement talks.
